This is how to extend the battery life of smartphones!

US scientists have discovered a new method that could increase the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries thanks to artificial intelligence. The team, led by Xiao Cui from Stanford University, found that using high current on the first charge of batteries has unexpected benefits.

For the first time, low current was preferred when charging lithium-ion batteries. However, it turned out that this method both prolonged charging time and negatively affected battery life. Cui and his team analyzed the effect of different current and temperature values on battery performance using machine learning.

The results showed that the combination of high current and moderate temperature significantly increased battery life. A thicker and more durable “solid electrolyte interface” layer was observed on the negative electrodes of batteries charged with high current.

This layer protects the internal structure of the battery from harmful chemical reactions and extends its life. Tests showed that the life of batteries charged with the new method increased by half, and in some cases even up to 70 percent.

This innovation is likely to make lithium-ion batteries, which are used in many areas from smartphones to electric vehicles, last longer. The researchers also emphasized that the method can be easily integrated into existing battery production processes.

It is very important that these positive results can be achieved with a different protocol to be applied only during the first charging phase, without any changes in the battery design. Of course, it is unclear for now when the technology will become widespread.
